Putting Tips, Tricks, and Reminders

Putting is often referred to as a "game within a game", and for good reason. While driving distance and long-shot accuracy are crucial, a large percentage of strokes are saved or wasted on the greens.  Some putting tips for you below to help you sink more putts and leave only tap-ins.

Stance:

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, allowing for a stable and balanced foundation. Bow forward from your hips and let your arms hang below your shoulders, giving you a clear and comfortable swing path.

Ball Position:

Place the golf ball slightly forward of center in your stance to promote a slight upward stroke.

Grip:

Choose a grip that feels comfortable for you and provides control. The most common grips are the traditional, cross-handed, and claw grips. Pick on that works for you and stick with it.

Alignment is Key:

One of the most common mistakes in putting is misalignment. Ensure that your putter face is square to your target line. Use a spot a few inches in front of the ball as a reference point and align your putter face parallel to it. Consistent alignment can lead to more accurate putts.

Smooth and Controlled Stroke:

A smooth and controlled putting stroke is vital for accuracy. Avoid unnecessary tension in your hands, wrists, and arms. Many successful putters employ a pendulum-like motion, allowing the putter to swing freely back and through the ball. Practice maintaining a consistent rhythm to develop muscle memory for a repeatable stroke. Don't move your head or look up until the ball has moved out of sight after contact.

Distance Control:

Putting isn't just about accuracy; it's also about controlling the distance of your putts. Spend time on the practice green working on your feel for different distances. Experiment with the length of your backswing to get a sense of how far the ball will travel with varying levels of force, and green speeds.

Read the Greens:

Understanding the contours of the green is crucial for successful putting. Take your time to assess the slope and break of the green before architecting your stroke. Look for subtle slopes, grain direction, and any other factors that may influence the ball's path. If not putting first in the group, watch the other players ball roll and adjust accordingly.

Mental Toughness:

Putting requires a strong mental game. Stay focused on each putt and avoid dwelling on previous shots. Develop a set pre-putt routine that helps you stay calm and focused under pressure, and stick to it as habit.

Massage any of the above items into your putting game if absent. Practice, practice, practice, and make sure you show up for each round confident in your green play.
